Jean-Martin Charcot was born in 1825 in Paris. His father was a manufacturer of decorated carriages. In 1848 he completed studies in medicine, afterwards began his work in Salpêtrière at the famous dermatologist, Pierre Rayer’s ward. Apart from conventional medicine, he also dealt with hypnosis. He became very famous when provoking hysteria in patients with the use of hypnosis.
Career among hysteric women.
He gradually climbed up the career ladder, to became an assistant professor in 1860. In 1870, he took over a newly established ward of “typical epileptics”, where he took care, among others, of women suffering from hysteria, considered the effect of uterus dysfunctions. In 1882, he became a professor of the Clinic of Nervous Diseases. He died in 1893.
U He was the first person who described a serious disease of the nervous system multiple sclerosis (SM). He suggested the name for the disease- “sclérose en plaques”. He described a triad of symptoms accompanying multiple sclerosis, called Charcot’s triad, involving nystagmus, scanning or staccato speech and intention tremor. His surname is also used in the notion of Charcot’s joint, a complication of wrongly controlled diabetes. Deformations and destruction occurring in the process of polyneuropathy and frequent osteomyelitis may even constitute the reason for amputations of lower limbs. Today we know that not every case of Charcot’s joint should be treated in such a radical way. Stabilization of the osteo-ligament system by a team of experienced orthopaedists may save a limb, enabling the patient to lead a comfortable life while observing diabetologic instructions. Such types of operations, however, require precision ensured by many years of practical stitching so as to join ligaments without a loss of their function. In order to master accurate movements, cut slightly the pad, near the edge and try to make the smallest stitches
Additionally, Charcot was a lover of sailing and discovering new areas. He even participated in antarctic expeditions.
